2017 County Youth Speech winner!

Congratulations to Pranov Swaminathan, winner of the 2017 Volusia County Farm Bureau Youth Speech Contest.
The 2017 Florida Farm Bureau Federation Youth Speech topic is “Today’s food companies employ many tactics, including food labels, to gain a marketing edge. How can farmers and ranchers ensure that consumers understand these labels and have confidence in the safety and quality of their food?” The Florida Farm Bureau Women’s Committee chose the topic.
Swaminathan, an eighth-grade student at Creekside Middle School, spoke about phone apps that could make communications between farmers and label-reading consumers better.

Seven teens participated in the contest. Their interpretations of the topic ranged from tricky food labels that claim “all natural” ingredients or “organic” ingredients to GMOs. Several contestants commented that farmers aren’t involved directly in labeling foods. Swaminathan’s approach was different, stating that farmers, while not involved in labeling foods, can educate consumers directly by developing technology and by using old-fashioned face-to-face events at farmers markets.
Swaminathan will move on to the District competition in the fall.

Second place went to Olivia Doyle and third was Baleigh Oliver. Doyle and Oliver are both students at DeLand High School.
